Marketing - It's Not All About You!
...It’s also not all about driving lots of visitors to your website. It’s not even all about getting lots of leads. So what is it about?
I think that marketing is about identifying your target audience. Find out who your customers are, or if you don’t have any, who they are most likely to be. Identify what they like and how they go about making purchases like the one you want them to make with you.
You don’t have to stick with just one type, you can create several. Jim from Viper Marketing explained what he does to me the other day: he has Nicole, an imaginary lady who has a degree in the right field, works within 75 miles of his office and is environmentally conscious. He goes on to flesh this ideal prospect out with much more details right down to the films they she likes.
Identifying who we want to communicate with is key before we start to send messages. If we don’t do this first step our messages will not get home to the most important people. If we know who were are talking to then we can identify where they are and how they like to be engaged.

are you self marketing?
As an entrepreneur and business person I have had a lot of experience in launching and running businesses. The most important part of any business is the marketing and sales.
You can have a great product but still fail if your sales and marketing is no good. We also see below average products and offers with great marketing that do fantastically well.
If you are a small business person or independent consultant you need to market yourself and your business. Self marketing is the cornerstone of success as a consultant and marketing your business yourself is the only option open to most small business owners.
However, most business people do not spend enough time on marketing. In one of my blog posts I ask “What are you going to do to get new customers today?” – if we just spend 1 hour a day getting new business we could grow substantially.
But too many business owners spend all their time running their business and don’t have an hour a day; I know from personal experience when I had restaurants I didn’t have a minute in the day, or night, spare.
But self marketing is key to success and somehow we need to find time. One thing I do is not open my emails until 10.30. That way I get 2 hours clear to focus on what is important and avoid reacting to new messages. Even doing that for one hour is enough to run a self marketing system for your business.
